German troops invade France in May 1940, prompting a small village in Pas-de-Calais to flee to the coast. The village mayor, Paul, leads the group, striving to maintain order and republican spirit. His wife, Mado, plays music to evoke memories of their village life. Meanwhile, a young teacher, Suzanne, navigates the group to find the safest route, while also caring for a young German boy, Max, whose father was arrested after the war declaration.
