Her childhood, marked by a promiscuous mother, has left deep psychological scars. Desirée's present life revolves around three characters: her employer Mrs. Resnick, a racist and prejudiced white woman; Freddy, her insecure black lover who ends their affair on a sad note; and Father Siego, the rigid and narrow-minded leader of a religious sect. As Desirée's relationships unravel, she becomes increasingly consumed by evil and blames her pregnant body for the darkness within.
