College student Jeffrey Beaumont returns to his hometown to manage his father's hardware store while his father is hospitalized. He finds a severed human ear in a meadow and gets entangled in a mysterious case. Detective Williams advises Jeffrey not to speak about the case, but his daughter Sandy shares information she overheard about a nightclub singer, Dorothy Vallens, being connected to the case. Jeffrey and Sandy's curiosity leads them to break into Dorothy's apartment, where they discover a world they don't fully understand but are drawn to, despite the risks.
