After the atomic bomb devastated Hiroshima, the Shizuma family, including Yasuko, navigate the ruins. Five years later, Yasuko lives with her aunt, uncle, and senile grandmother in a village where many survivors reside. Despite appearing unaffected, Yasuko's family worries about her marriage prospects due to the risk of radiation sickness.
