Captain Jeff Stanton leads a cavalry unit to return the Mescaleros Apaches to their reservation in 1879 Arizona Territory. He captures Red Hawk, the chief's son, to negotiate a truce, promising to keep settlers off Indian lands. However, a group of greedy townsfolk and gold miners plot to break the truce, murder the Indian agent, and blame the Apaches. This leads to Captain Stanton's replacement by Colonel Perry, who adopts a brutal strategy, resulting in disastrous consequences.
