Chloe Turner, a Ph.D. candidate in Marine Mammalogy, embarks on a one-week research project in Washington State to study the endangered Southern Resident Orca population in the Salish Sea. The project offers her a chance to reevaluate her relationship with Marcus, a Ph.D. candidate in Economics, and to gain independence by not seeking help from Ben Winters, a marine tour guide with extensive knowledge of the orcas. Despite initial reservations, Chloe and Ben start to develop feelings for each other, which they try to keep hidden due to her relationship with Marcus. However, their budding romance is threatened by challenges in Chloe's research project, as she struggles to locate Echo, the smallest of the three orca pods, which is crucial for the success of her study and her potential to stay in Cable Cove to work on her dissertation.
