Bertha Jacoby, a widow from a predominantly Jewish Brooklyn neighborhood, is forced to leave her comfort zone when her son-in-law announces they're moving to Tokyo for his diplomatic assignment. Despite her anti-Japanese sentiments and painful memories of her son's death in the Pacific Theater, Bertha agrees to join them. On the ship to Tokyo, she befriends Koichi Asano, a wealthy Japanese businessman, who will be involved in sensitive negotiations with Jerry and the American contingent.
