A fugitive, Lindsay, escapes from an Australian prison after 19 years, serving time for armed robberies. He travels to Mumbai and eventually finds himself in Prabhakar's village in India, where he's warmly received by the community.
In the bustling streets of Mumbai, a former Australian prisoner, now known as Shantaram, finds a new identity and begins to rebuild his life. He learns the local language, Marathi, and soon becomes embroiled in the city's criminal underworld.
