Women of Steel background

Women of Steel

In Australia, a notable movement emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, as hundreds of migrant and working-class women united to fight for equal rights, taking on the country's largest corporation, BHP.

In 1980s Wollongong, a group of working-class migrant women fought against discrimination by refusing to accept rejection from the city's main employer, the steelworks. Their 14-year struggle against BHP, Australia's largest and most powerful company, took them from the factory gates to the highest court in the land, ultimately changing the rules for women across the country.
