The Siege of Fort William Henry background

The Siege of Fort William Henry

A French army of 9,000 men, joined by nearly 2,000 American Indian allies, launched a siege of Fort William Henry on Lake George in the New York Frontier in 1757.

The film recounts the events of the 1757 siege of Fort William Henry, a British fort on the New York frontier during the French and Indian War. A French army of 9,000 men, including 2,000 American Indian allies, laid siege to the fort, bombarding it with cannons and harassing the adjacent encampment. After six days, the British and colonials surrendered, only to be massacred by their Indian allies the following day. The events inspired James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Last of the Mohicans" and are brought to life through journals and letters of men who were present at the siege.
