A detached and diffident director, Anna, travels to Germany to showcase her latest film. She checks into a hotel, invites a stranger to her bed, and abruptly asks him to leave. Despite her aloof nature, she accepts an invitation to a birthday lunch with a stranger's mother and daughter. In Cologne, she reconnects with an old friend, a Polish Jew and war refugee. The war's lingering presence is evident as Anna listens to strangers' personal stories with minimal emotional response.
