In rural Japan during the late 1910s, Tome is born into poverty. Her father, Chuji, adores her, but her mother is less devoted. As World War II unfolds, Tome becomes the mistress of a neighbor and works at his mill. She has a daughter, Nobuko, and after an affair with a supervisor, sets out to find success in Tokyo, leaving Nobuko behind with Chuji.
