In a 1948 Italian refugee camp, Karin, a stunning woman, meets Antonio, a resident of the men's camp. Despite not being in love with him, Karin marries Antonio and they move to his village, Stromboli, on a remote island beneath an active volcano. However, Karin is disillusioned with the desolate landscape and the lack of people, as many have left for the United States. Struggling to communicate in the local dialect, she faces disdain from the locals who view her as an exotic outsider and a loose woman. After being physically abused by Antonio, Karin sets out on a perilous journey across the mountains to find freedom and a better life.
