A cardiologist, Alfred Blalock, leaves Vanderbilt for Johns Hopkins with his lab technician, Vivien Thomas, a gifted mechanic and tool-maker with exceptional surgical skills. They tackle the challenge of blue babies and develop bypass surgery in 1941. After successful trials on dogs, they operate on baby Eileen, who would have died without the procedure. Despite defying custom and racial segregation, Blalock brings Thomas into the surgery, but when recognition comes, Thomas is overlooked.
