North American poets, over 20 in number, come together to recite, sing, and perform their work, with some also offering commentary. The film opens with Charles Bukowski discussing the energy of poets and the power of a poem. These poets are known for their energetic performances, with their words meant to be heard. Drawing inspiration from Walt Whitman and Charles Olson, they bring an incantatory and oratorical style to their work, often incorporating contemporary political imagery. The film showcases a range of poetic styles, from the Black Mountain poets and Beats to minimalists like John Cage, as well as the wordless Four Horsemen and Tom Waits, among others, highlighting the troubadour-like qualities of these poets.
