In the midst of the first Gulf War, a 13-year-old girl named Jasira is sent to live with her strict and distant father in Houston after her mother decides she's too developed for their small town. As Jasira navigates her new surroundings, she faces challenges such as discovering her own sexuality, dealing with racial prejudices, and confronting unwanted advances from adults. Amidst these struggles, Jasira finds herself drawn to a forbidden romance with an African-American classmate, forcing her to confront her own agency and the inevitability of tragedy.
