In 1244, during a time of religious persecution, a pacifist Christian group known as Cathars faced eradication by Pope Innocent IV and King Louis IX of France. The last of the Cathars took refuge at the Castle of Montsegur, where a dedicated group of 100 defending knights held off a crusading army of over 10,000 mercenaries for 9 months. The Cathars' fate and the treasure they protected remain shrouded in mystery.
