After his father's death, a 23-year-old man is consumed by grief and considers ending his life by jumping into a frozen river. Miraculously, he survives. His mother sends him to live with his uncle in Japan, hoping a change of scenery will help him cope with his depression. The uncle, Takuma, is a vastly different person from his father, with unconventional values that include encouraging his nephew to drink sake and engage in promiscuous behavior. Despite the initial shock, these unorthodox methods eventually help Ken find the will to live again.
