When Cufe Smallhill, a registered Seminole with Creek heritage, discovers his father's body, a series of events unfolds, as foretold by a Muscogee-speaking narrator. After a funeral where the coffin is filled with weights and a watermelon, Cufe travels to Tulsa to be with his sister Miri, who is struggling with her own issues, including an estranged relationship with their mother and a troubled life of drinking, promiscuity, and theft.
