Chips, a Brooklyn cat, is kicked out by his father and tasked with retrieving his ancestor's bone from a goldfish named Fish, who is the fish's descendant. Chips' friend Rolf helps him in various schemes to get the bone, but each attempt fails. The bone ultimately falls into the sewers, leading to a series of failed attempts to retrieve it. In their desperation, Chips and Fish turn to a life of vandalism, but eventually, a catfish named Caline returns the bone to them, realizing the negative influence they have on each other.
