An alien time traveler, the Doctor, is transporting his archenemy, the Master, to their homeworld when the Master's essence escapes and sabotages the Doctor's time machine. The Doctor crash lands in San Francisco and requires a beryllium atomic clock to repair his TARDIS, but is shot and taken to hospital. There, a surgeon's mistake triggers the Doctor's seventh regeneration. Meanwhile, the Master takes over a paramedic's body and needs the Doctor's body to survive and regenerate again. The newly regenerated Doctor must fight to save his own life and the world when the Master sabotages the TARDIS' power source, threatening to destroy the Earth by midnight on December 31st.
