In 1902 Vienna, Alma Schindler meets Gustav Mahler, a renowned composer, and becomes his lover. They eventually marry, but Mahler asks her to give up composing music. Despite having two children and working as his assistant, Alma feels suffocated by her domestic duties. After the death of a child, she falls in love with Walter Gropius, and begins an affair with Oskar Kokoschka. Eventually, she marries Gropius, but finds his imperious nature stifling. She leaves him for Franz Werfel, who discovers her compositions and helps her share them with the public.
