The movie dramatizes a pivotal evening in the life of Lorenz Hart, the lyricist half of the successful songwriting duo Rodgers and Hart. On March 31, 1943, Hart's world is turned upside down as he attends the opening night of Rodgers' new musical Oklahoma, co-written with Oscar Hammerstein II. Despite his bitterness towards Rodgers for pausing their collaboration due to his alcoholism, Hart tries to appear supportive, taking subtle jabs at the show and its new lyrics. After leaving the theater, Hart heads to Sardi's, where he hopes to find solace in a planned "date" with 20-year-old Elizabeth Weiland, a Yale student and friend he hopes to turn romantic.
