During World War II, a boy's discovery of a dead soldier sets off a chaotic night in German-occupied Romania. As the German authorities threaten to shoot the town leaders if the perpetrator isn't identified, the townspeople turn to their "fool", Ipu, to confess and save them. Led by Father Johanis, they try to convince Ipu to take the blame, but the line between comedy and darkness is blurred as the deadline looms.
