In the midst of the Bosnian war, two journalists, Flynn and Michael Henderson, and their teams converge in Sarajevo. While reporting on the conflict, they discover a makeshift orphanage run by Mrs. Savic, situated perilously close to the frontline. Moved by the children's plight, Henderson decides to smuggle one of the orphans, Emira, back to England, defying the rules and putting himself at risk.
