In the sweltering heat of late summer Tuscaloosa, Alabama, racial tension and anti-war protests simmer just below the surface. Billy Mitchell, a recent college graduate, works at his father's old-world mental institution, where he falls for enigmatic patient Virginia. As Billy navigates his relationships with his father, his friend Nigel, and the radical civil rights movement, he's torn between his loyalty to those around him and his growing feelings for Virginia, who's planning a daring escape.
