In the sweltering summer of 1994, a young man named Luke Shapiro navigates the complexities of adulthood in New York City. Fresh out of high school, Luke supplements his income by selling marijuana and trades it for therapy sessions with a psychologist, Dr. Jeffrey Squires. As he delves deeper into this unusual arrangement, Luke finds himself drawn to Stephanie, a classmate who is out of his league and happens to be Dr. Squires' step-daughter. As their relationship blossoms, Luke's life becomes increasingly intertwined with that of his mentor and his family, all of whom are struggling with their own personal demons.
