A young man is dispatched to Italy in the 1950s to fetch a wealthy playboy, but his mission spirals into chaos when everything goes awry.

In 1950s Manhattan, a bathroom attendant named Tom Ripley dons a Princeton jacket to play piano at a garden party. He befriends the wealthy father of a recent Princeton graduate, who offers Tom $1,000 to convince Dickie Greenleaf to return home. Tom becomes fast friends with Dickie and his fiancée Marge in Italy, where he indulges in luxury and harbors hidden desires.
