In 1950s Beijing, a young couple, Chen Shujuan and Lin Shaolong, start a family, but their happiness is short-lived. Shaolong is taken away and dies in a reform camp, while Shujuan and their son, Tietou, face numerous challenges. Despite the hardships, Shujuan's love for Tietou keeps her going, and the blue kite they share becomes a symbol of hope and a promise for a better future.
