Singer-songwriter Doc Jenkins, played by Willie Nelson, attempts to transition from his artistic roots to the world of music industry moguls, only to find himself entangled in a problematic publishing deal. He assembles a team of loyal associates, including a young singer and his former partner Blackie Buck, portrayed by Kris Kristofferson, to devise a plan to escape the deal. Along the way, he receives assistance from a stereotypical small-time concert promoter. Meanwhile, Doc's love interest and ex-wife, Honey Carder, played by Melinda Dillon, adds a personal layer to the story.
