In 1917 Portugal, 17-year-old Zacarias joins the army to fight in World War I, but instead is sent to Mozambique. He faces harsh realities, including treatment of locals as second-class citizens. When his unit leaves him behind, he sets out to catch up, accompanied by two African helpers. Despite their efforts, Zacarias' disdain for them leads to a brutal incident, and he's left to navigate the jungle alone, struggling with hunger, illness, and despair.
