French filmmaker René Vidal is struggling to revive his career after a string of unsuccessful films. He's now filming a remake of Les Vampires, starring Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung as the lead, Irma Vep. Despite their language barrier and Maggie's unfamiliarity with Vidal's work, she's determined to excel in her role. However, Maggie may face isolation among the cast and crew unless she finds allies who can help her navigate the complex dynamics. Meanwhile, Vidal is dealing with personal issues and may project his own desires onto Maggie, who he sees as strong and sexy like the character Irma.
