HOMOE: Looking for Shelter background

HOMOE: Looking for Shelter

A gay refugee from Azerbaijan, Javid, begins a mission to advocate for LGBTI rights after a suicide attempt in a refugee camp.

Since 2011, the European Union has recognized sexual orientation and gender identity as criteria for refugee status. Germany accepted LGBTI refugees from 2013, but the refugee boom in 2015 led to a slow asylum process for these individuals, who felt like "second-class refugees". Some prepared for a better life, others looked forward to self-acceptance, and some fought against injustice to their "rainbow colors".
