A young drifter, nicknamed Cooncat, is caught stealing food at the Davis ranch in Texas' Big Bend country. Suspicious of his past, the ranch hands rough him up until he admits to committing a murder. Cooncat claims he killed a trading post owner who stole his money, but his story is shrouded in mystery. As the Davis clan investigates, they uncover a web of deceit and revenge that threatens to destroy their own lives.
