WWII prisoner Stephen Brooks is sent to work at a Munich zoo, where he forms a bond with Lucy the elephant. After a bombing raid, the zoo's animals are evacuated, and Lucy is scheduled to be transported to Austria. Brooks comes up with the idea to walk Lucy to Austria with two armed guards, a friendly Austrian soldier and a brutal German soldier, and a Polish maid as their cook.
