Five Men and a Caravaggio background

Five Men and a Caravaggio

In the heart of Dafen village, a meticulous Chinese artisan meticulously hand-paints a replica of Caravaggio's renowned masterpiece, John in the Wilderness.

A Chinese artisan painstakingly recreates Caravaggio's "John in the Wilderness" in his home studio, involving his family in the process. Meanwhile, a Swiss Italian poet receives the copy as a 40th birthday gift and becomes captivated by the youthful image of himself in the work. As he struggles to reconcile the copy with the original, a philosopher friend offers to repaint the piece, joined by two other friends, an Eritrean writer and a French photographer, each with their own artistic aspirations. The film interweaves these events with a poignant portrayal of the Chinese artisan's family, working together to produce art and chase their dreams in Shenzhen.
