A Belgian woman, born in Japan and raised there until age 5, returns to Tokyo after college graduation to work as an interpreter at a Japanese corporation. Despite initial impressions of her boorish superiors, she finds a trustworthy ally in her immediate supervisor, Ms. Mori. However, Amélie's success ultimately leads to her downfall as she is betrayed by a colleague and faces a series of humiliations, threatening her relationships with Ms. Mori and the country she once called home.
