In the vast, remote expanse of Kazakhstan's desert, few caravans had braved the northern Silk Road route over the centuries. There was no apparent reason to settle or fight for the barren landscape. However, in 1955, the Soviet government discovered that these distant lands were mere steps away from reaching for the stars.
