A young journalist's groundbreaking investigation into a suicide is stifled by her influential publisher, who prioritizes their own interests over the truth.

A young female reporter, Jerry Hampden, discovers a scoop about a suicide caused by a lover who lost interest, but her publisher nixes the story due to the perpetrator's influential background. After being fired, she lands a job as an editor at a small town newspaper, The Advocate, and turns the paper's fortunes around. She uncovers a scheme by the local banker to suppress news of a successful oil well drilling and instead tries to buy back shares from investors. With evidence of the scheme and a personal connection to the department store owner involved, Jerry forces the banker and owner to sign agreements that benefit the local community.
