Abebe Bikila, an Ethiopian long distance runner, stunned the world by winning Olympic gold in the marathon in 1960. He became a sports legend, the first African to win a gold medal, and went on to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in Tokyo. Despite a tragic car accident that left him paralyzed, Bikila discovered a new meaning of competition, taking up archery and competing in the Paralympics and as a handicapped dog sledder.
