A young Norwegian girl, Kim, survives a near-fatal fall and seeks refuge in the territory of a wolf and her puppy. As she spends more time with the wolf, her fear gradually gives way to understanding and compassion. When she learns that three shepherds are determined to kill the wolf, Kim decides to make a perilous journey across the border to Sweden, where wolves are protected.
