In 1938, Gandhi's party gains momentum in women's rights. A young widow, Chuyia, is abandoned at an impoverished ashram for widows beside the Ganges during monsoon season. The ashram's leader forces a young and beautiful widow, Kalyani, to sell herself for household funds. Narayan, a Gandhi follower, falls in love with Kalyani and struggles to reconcile his feelings with tradition. The ashram's moral center, Shakuntala, grapples with her own fate while trying to protect Kalyani and Chuyia.
