In this romantic adventure, a rebellious general takes over a small Mexican town, imprisoning the leaders, including the father of a fiery young woman named Maria. When Maria stands up to the general, he's captivated by her spirit and demands she become his wife. Despite their tumultuous relationship, the general helps the town fight an epidemic and eventually decides to retreat from the government troops. Maria, inspired by the rebels' bugles, leaves her wedding ceremony to join the general and his ragged army on their desert journey to the sunset.
