The Stratford Shakespearean Festival of Canada was founded in 1953 by Tom Patterson, a Stratford-born journalist, with a production of "Richard III" starring Alec Guinness. It has since grown to include a wide range of classical theatre works and is now known as the Stratford Festival of Canada, the largest classical repertory theatre in North America.
