Johan van der Keuken, a renowned Dutch documentary filmmaker, learns he has prostate cancer and is given only a few years to live. In response, he embarks on a journey to capture his experiences on film, hoping to share them with the afterworld. His travels take him to Kathmandu, where he meets Buddhist monks and a healer, and to Burkina Faso and Mali, on the edge of the Sahara desert. Along the way, he collects memories that help make the rest of his life more bearable.
