In the decaying city of Newcastle upon Tyne, a jazz club owner, Finney, has defied the odds to achieve success over a decade. He hires Brendan, an Irishman in need of work, not just as a cleaner but also to run errands, including picking up a jazz ensemble from the airport. This job comes at a time when the city is hosting American Week, a high-profile event organized by Cosmo, a Texas businessman seeking investment opportunities.
