Sun Ra, a space-age visionary, returns to Oakland after being presumed lost in space. He claims to be "the alter-destiny" and holds a rap session with black youth, urging them to join him in outer space. He then engages in a card duel with a satanic overlord, securing a world concert featuring the Arkestra. As agents sent by the overlord attempt to kill him, Ra disappears, rescues his people, and departs in his spaceship from an exploding Earth.
