David Helfgott, a child piano prodigy, faces tension with his overbearing father, Peter, due to his musical ambitions. After securing a scholarship to London, Helfgott's career flourishes, but the pressures of fame and childhood trauma lead to the emergence of his latent schizophrenia, resulting in years of institutionalization.
