Alien robots invade Earth, claiming to only observe humanity. They enforce a strict rule, implanting humans with devices that alert sentries to anyone who ventures outside. Those who refuse compliance are destroyed. The robots employ humans as proctors, including Robin Smythe. He tries to win over Kate Flynn, whose son Sean still grieves the loss of his father, whom Smythe claims died. However, Sean doubts this and secretly searches for answers. When he and friends discover they can turn off their implants, they venture outside and receive a message revealing his father's whereabouts. Pursued by Smythe and the robots, Sean is cornered, but he surprisingly gains control over the robots.
