In a Missouri town, Jake Roedel and Jack Bull Chiles form a close bond during the Civil War era. With limited rights for women and African Americans, the young men join the Bushwhackers, a group of irregulars fighting for the South. Their ranks include Daniel Holt, a freed slave, who is bound to the man who purchased his freedom. As they engage in skirmishes and spend long hours hiding, they encounter Sue Lee, a young widow who becomes Jack Bull's lover. When Jack Bull is severely injured, Jake accompanies Sue Lee to a safe farm in the south. However, the Bushwhackers, driven by a desire for revenge, launch a raid into Kansas. At 19, Jake struggles with the morality of war as his friends fall one by one, and he must decide where his sense of honor truly lies.
